Radical expressions include terms that contains radicals of nth roots, such as square roots or cube roots. Polynomial expressions contain one or more monomials combined by addition and/or subtraction. Because the latter is a more general math term, it is possible that a polynomial expression could contain a radical expression.

Radical and polynomial expressions can both be the sum of several terms. Radical expressions, however, involves terms with square roots (or the sum thereof), while polynomial expressions involve terms with exponents (or the sum thereof).
