Does handwriting practice really help?

My son seems to get a lot of handwriting homework.

Absolutely. If you have any doubts, take up calligraphy (the art of penmanship). You will see improvement over the first several hours that you practice. However, you will notice that it takes many years of practice to really write beautifully.

With the age of computers, I think that handwriting has become less and less important. As long as he can write and it is legible, I do not think it is necessary to continually practice. I would focus more on typing lessons.

Just like any other fine motor skill, handwriting only gets better with pracice. Repeated strokes of the pencil/pen help develop muscle memory, making your son's writing not only more legible, but easier and quicker for him to produce.
