By chains I would assume you mean tire chains. The answer is no, only put ice spikes on motorcycles. The reason is for safety. The tires of a motorcycle have to lean and there is just too much chance for slippage.
Yes chain are a consumable item like brakes or a clutch. New chains and be installed to replaced ones the are broken or have been over-stretched. The old one is cut off and is set in place and cut to length. Then it is installed.
