It depends. Some people are more severely bipolar than others and may need to take medication forever. Others may learn behavior modification techniques and filtering and coping methods that help them manage as well as medication. It depends on the patient, the medication, the physician and a number of other facts that play into mental wellness.

It appears once you start taking these incredibly powerful meds for bipolar that you are on them for life. Although the meds may change frequently it is likely that your life will always involve taking the medication. There don't seem to be any other viable alternative therapies at the moment. You have to learn to manage the disease.

It may indeed be possible to reduce or stop the medication. It is very important though that it not been done cold turkey but a gradual weaning.
