As long as the weeds are kept at bay by a ground cover, periwinkles will grow in Zone 5 with ease. Like in any Zone they just require care and attention.

Periwinkle, also called Myrtle, dies in winter and grows from its root system in warm weather. Periwinkle is a hardy plant and will invade natural areas if left alone. Periwinkles bloom repeatedly from mid-spring to mid-fall, producing white, blue, and purple tinted flowers. As a ground cover, it keeps weeds at bay and few insects invade it.

These colorful plants, known as Vinca, are identifiable by their teardrop-shaped leaves and pale blue/lavendar five-star flower. The are low-growing and good for flatfields and ground cover. They grow almost all over the world. You can find them especially in Zones 3 - 8; they are perennial evergreens.
