Most mites are parasites to either plants or animals. There are a few mite species that can affect humans. Chiggers are a type of mite commonly found in grass that affect humans. They bite and make you itch and in some cause severe skin irritation if you are highly sensitive to them. Up-keeping your yard regularly will help maintain them.

Out of the thousands of species of mites, yes, there are some that pose great discomfort or danger. If they are blood-feeding they can carry disease, promote disease through anemia, sores etc. Dust mites, though benign overall, can cause severe allergies and open the door to suppressed immune disorders.

Certain mites do post a danger, such as the itch mite known as Sarcoptes scabiei (which are responsible for scabies). Other mites, such as dust mites, are not dangerous. Mites even live on human eyelashes! (Demodex sp. mites). So it really all depends on which mites you are talking about.

Only our sanity! Mites are not physically dangerous but they can be quite a bother! You don't need to worry about your safety though. They are not able to harm humans.
