Armies used trenches throughout World War One. The trenches were very elaborate as the stalemate between the Germans and the French/British forces developed. The soldiers could stand in the trenches.
Trench warfare was common throughout World War I and was one of the reasons the war dragged on so long as a stalemate because of the difficulty of digging new trenches as new territory was gained.
