No there were not. In the 1970's the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) placed a ban on gas stoves and fireplaces calling them too dangerous.

Gas fireplaces date back to at least the 19th century. Gas fireplaces have never been as popular as "the real thing" because most people like the smell produced by a fireplace. Each kind of wood burns with a distinctive odor.
