Could a compressor cause a freon leak?

It could cause the leak but usually they do not start there. Most likely it will be one of the fittings on or near the compressor that has the leak.

It is possible that a compressor could cause a freon leak, if it's been improperly installed, placing strain on the fixtures and fittings that keep it in place. The pipes or the compressor itself may also have a leak due to this.

It isn't likely the compressor caused a refrigerant leak unless it was improperly installed. Binding in the pipe or incorrect mountings cause excessive vibration, which can crack the braized joints. A faulty compressor with a problem in the crank can also cause excess vibration which will crack solder joints and lines.

Yes a compressor can have a freon leak, it just depends on if your compressor is bad or not. To check this, it is recommended that you inject UV dye into the compressor so you can see if the freon is actually leaking.
