The first real video game console was the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972, followed by the Atari Pong in 1975. They are considered the 1st generation while current consoles are 7th generation. Nintendo and Sega entered the console market in the mid 80s, Sony in 1994 and Microsoft in 2001. Nintendo is thus the oldest manufacturer of consoles still in business.

They've been around for quite some time, but didn't reach mass market until the mid-eighties. Nintendo was the first, widely popular mass market machine with 8-bit power, and was almost owned by Atari.

The first "video games" were made in the 1940s. They were made of cathode rays and usually involved shooting missiles. They later evolved into computer games. The "golden age" of video games started in the 1970s with arcade games. Later, the Atari systems emerged, and then came the consoles and handheld games we know today.
