The cymbal stand is generally erected with tripod footing. You must first remove the wing nut and small felt spacer while leaving the large felt spacer on the joint. The ride cymbal is then placed on top of the large felt spacer and the small felt spacer is placed on top of the cymbal followed by the wing nut.

You want to be sure to set up your ride cymbal close enough to the hand that will play it so that you can be comfortable playing it for extended periods of time. My ride cymbal is to my right and close to where my hand would normally rest.

The main thing you need to worry about is height. Make sure you are using the same seat you will use for your performances. Then play around with different heights. You want to make sure that your arm doesn't get sore or tired from putting it up too high, and that you can still hit it with the right strength.
