car repairs

Question by  Treens (30)

Can you tell me how to adjust valves on a 2.8?

Not know what kind of engine it is here is a general procedure. Snug the rocker down until the barely turn. Then a feeler gauge to set the clearance.

well first of all you would need to know what kind of car you are trying to adjust the valves on. The reason you would need to know which car this is you are working on is because cars can be assembled differently and therefore any tinkering can negatively affect your progress towards adjustment.

Most modern, post-1980, engines do not require valve adjustments. In particular, the GM 2.8L is a "no-play" engine - meaning, you bolt it down to the stop and leave it there. It may be possible that the rocker bolts have come loose which may require new lock-bolts to keep them tightened down.

Older pushrod engines that did not use adjustable rocker arms need to have the valve lash adjusted periodically. With the valve completely closed, tighten the rocker arm bolt down until there is no play in the pushrod, but it can still be spun by hand. Newer engines have non-adjustable rocker arms that do not require adjustment.
