The main question is, if the tap water in your area is treated with chlorine or chloramine; and also other conditions like pH etc. are important. Chlorine is very toxic to fish, but there are chemicals available to treat the water to make it safe. Check with your pet shop!

The water must have no chlorine or other harmful minerals, metals or substances. If the tap uses well water, it is probably not chlorinated like community water supplies. But the simplest thing is to use a water conditioner available at pet stores -- one made by Jungle is in the "Tank Buddies" tablet form; it is called "Water Safe Plus. "

The cholrine and other chemicals that are added to the water as part of the water treatment process can affect all kids of fish. There is a chemical that you can purchase at most pet stores that you add to the tap water that takes the chlorine out and makes it safe for the fish.
