You can get hives just from being nervous about getting a tattoo - so yes. Of course there is also the chemicals used in the ink and at the shop.

Hives can be related to stress, or an alergic reaction so in a sense you can get hives from the ink used in a tattoo, have your artist do a test dot 24 hours before any work is done. This will allow you both to see if you are allergic to the ink he/she may use.

You can get hives from a tattoo if you are allergic to a certain color or pigment. Different colors have different compounds and ingredients that you may get a reaction too.

Hives is an allergic reaction to something. You could have a reaction to any of the items that are used in the tattoo process including the sanitizer that is used on the equipment, the ink, the latex gloves that the person is wearing, or the after care cream or ointment that you are given.

This can happen if you are allergic to the ink or to the needle that was used. They can also be an early sign of infection. See a doctor.
