Can you eat the fruit of the Barberry Shrub?

If one looks around you can find many (reliable) sources for using barberry berries in cooking. It was a common ingredient in Medieval cookery and is available dried in some 'ethnic' stores. So they're not poison. Wrong alarm bell to ring.

People who live in the Mediterranean say that Barberry has age-defying benefits. These people eat this herb as part of their usual diet. The ripe fruits are made into jellies. Barberry cam be used to treat malaria. Barberry is used by naturopaths to treat dysentry. It has infection fighting properties.

That is very scary you should talk to a professional about that you certainly don't want to eat the wrong thing and end up very sick or worse. And do not trust what you get on here these are not professionals in this.
