BMD searchs are free in the United Kingdom, New South Wales and a few other locations. Searching family genealogy seems more of a British concept. For the US, depends on the state and resources available. There are genealogy groups/clubs on state and local levels. Some charge fees and some don't.

Yes all BMD searches are free in England and Wales through FreeBMD if the record is after 1837 to now.

Yes you can get a BMD search for free and if they do charge i do believe the prices may vary due to different economies.
