It is not uncommon for doctors to have patients take Prometrium to increase the odds of becoming pregnant, some even encourage women to continue on the medication for the first trimester in order to prevent miscarriage. However there is a known link between cleft pallet and continuing on Prometrium beyond the first trimester.

Prometrium is routinely given (generally in early pregnancy) to patients whos body needs help sustaining a pregnancy. Provided the placenta has "taken over" and is producing the hormones properly, the medication (upon doctor's advice) can be discontinued. If further assistance is necessary, it can still be taken to aid sustaining the pregnancy.

Never take any drugs unless you've asked your doctor first. A lot of drugs are actually harmful to the growth and development of a baby during the pregnancy. Even most over the counter drugs aren't good for you at this time.

Woman who have history of miscarriages and produce low level of progesterone can take prometrium to boost their progesterone level until the placenta formed and functioning,it will takes over and it will produce everything the fetus needs. So it is not necessary to take it after 12 weeks of pregnancy.
