You can! I worked at Best Buy and I had a customer who sold 100 lbs of scrap metal to buy an xbox 360!

Yes. Before you take your metal, make sure you don't have to clean it or anything. If you take a truckbed full, the truck is weighed loaded and then the metal is taken out and it is weighed again. Some scrapyards now make you sign a paper saying that the metals weren't stolen.
