Are there certain things that attract gnats?

Gnats are swarming in my yard and over my deck. I'd like to avoid them if possible.

Moisture, garbage, and the smell of anything rotten or spoiled attracts gnats. A quick inspection of your back yard should reveal where the likely attractors are.

Yes, anything that contains whatever they like to eat. That includes leafy stems and mite infested tree trunks. Agglomeration of gnats is further compunded by females laving their egg pods onto the undersides of leaves and aby wooden surface. Late summer and early autumn are the top season for this sort of behaviour.

We have a tank for rain water. Will this attract gnats? Also will they get into your bed and bite?
