I have seen several shows regarding gem mines throught the U.S., and in particularly N. Carolina. I have even spoken to some old-timers who make a living visiting the various "pay" mines and according to them they have been extremely satisfied with every visit to N. Carolina. So the answer would be a big yes on both accounts.
