This depends on the Jeep Model and the Year. For wranglers the 4.0 was an option, when that engine was available. The standard engine was a 2.5l. The same setup applied to the Cherokee from the late 80's through 2002. The 4.0L was the standard engine in the Grand Cherokee, up until the 3.7 became the standard offering.
