Both species of elephant (African and Asian) are considered endangered - which means the trade involving animals or products, such as ivory, is banned. In certain regions in Africa it's still possible to hunt elephants legally – after obtaining the permit – in order to keep growing populations under control. It's estimated that less than 50,000 Asian elephants exist today.
