I've raised calicos and torties, so I've looked into this. Yes, they are usually female. And I've found that callies and torties almost always have a marmalade male in their heritage, or give birth to marmalades. It's some kind of genetic thing. However, I have had a few males in each litter. Color is a sex-based trait.

Calico cats are ALMOST always female; the gene for the color pattern "calico" is EXTREMELY rare in males. It's just the way the genes split - its very rare for that color pattern to show up in a boy!
