Listening is related to reading and audible books help people to use their imagination, and to acquire a good vocabulary and storytelling ability. It reinforces literacy and is very valuable.

Audio books convey story structure, syntax and expand vocabulary. Public schools/parents/television are to blame for why many people in the US are functionally illiterate. They can actually read and write, but only at a very low level. To write well you must read a lot. Most people do neither.
