Why won't my car go in reverse?

It's an automatic transmission, but I can't get it to go backward.

It sounds like you are having a problem with the automatic clutch in the transmission. You can get a rebuild kit and it will have the clutches in it.

The first thing to do is check the transmission fluid and see if it is low or leaking. If it is not to the full line, fill it up.

Check your shift cable wire, it could be snapped or stretched in that position. Also, the reverse gear in your transmission could be jammed or have a gear snapped off of its pivot. Taking it in to a shop might be your only option in this case, have good luck!

It is time for your car to go into the shop. Once you lose the ability to go into reverse (and sometimes forward) your automatic transmission is going out.
