How do you troubleshoot problems with a car's transmission?

My car sometimes won't go into gear.

First off u need to check the shift linkage on the vehicle. next if a manual trans. check clutch free play . automotic start by checking fluid.

It sounds to me like your shifting linkage might be stretched and needs to be replaced.The only way to do this is to look at the transmission shift lever to see if it is in the detent. It is a hard place to work on, so get someone to help you by doing the shifting while you check the transmission.

The first thing to check is the fluid level and condition. If the fluid is at the top (warm engine) but is all brown and smells bad, flushing it out and changing the filter could fix it up. If not, and you know nothing about cars, it's best to take it to a repair shop.

well you have to figure out what exactly your car is doing. You say it wont go into gear sometimes. so when does it do on a hill or when you start to drive when stopped. does the tranny slip at all. does it make any noise. your probably low on tranny fluid.
