Why do people use that fake-looking wood flooring?

There are so many advantages. So it does not look as good as wood, but you have to decide what is more important. Ease of cleaning, ease of installation, money saved. Adding it all up, it adds significantly to practicality .

Real wood expands and contracts, and it takes a skilled person to install it and make sure it will last. I agree that old laminate flooring looks pretty fake, but the newer stuff is pretty impressive; its also much easier to install and maintain.

My belief is that people use that laminate wood flooring because it is very much less expensive than real hardwood. In addition, it is easier to install and can with less difficulty be installed over a sub-floor or over previous flooring material.

I picked it for my dining room because it is more spill-resistant than real wood, and prettier than vinyl flooring! (Couldn't match the tile in the kitchen.)

Laminate flooring is easier to care for than real plank wood flooring, easier and cheaper to install, and cheaper materials. I think it's installed mostly by people who are into fashion -- wood-look laminate floors and wood-laminate floors are popular right now, rather than carpeting.

I think that most people use the fake-looking wood flooring for lost cost. The cost of really hard wood is expensive. Also, some people opt for a cheaper looking floor on a new home to cut down on the total home's cost and then replace them at a later time.
