Why are old telephone boxes red?

In 1924 the United Kingdon had a competition to design a phone booth. Giles Gilbert Scott was the winner and suggested silver. The Royal Fine Art Commission had the Post Master General decide the final color. Red, so it would be easy to recognize at a distance for an emergency.

The old telephone box, is also called a public telephone kiosk designed by Sir Gilbert Scott. The color red was chosen to make them easy to spot.
