As a teen, Benjamin Franklin was frustrated that his brother, who ran a press, would not publish anything that Ben wrote. The young Franklin created Silence Dogood, a middle-aged widow who left letters under the door of the printing shop, which Franklin's brother printed. Fourteen letters are known to exist.

Silence Dogood was the first pseudonym used by Benjamin Franklin. He used the name to write letters to a Boston newspaper, The New England Courant, published by his older brother.
