An open fontanelle in dogs is on top of the head. It is where the skull bones did not fuse together. It's like a soft spot babies have when they're newborns. Veterinarians can usually tell by the time puppies are four months old if they will have an open fontanelle.

An open fontanel is the soft spot on the top of a puppies head. Congenital open fontanels are often found in toy breeds. The fontanel is the area at the top of the skull where the bone plates merge. that open fontanel is the soft spot on the top of a puppies head.

Just like human babies, the fontanel is the soft spot at the top of a puppy's skull- open fontanel can be a congenital problem in some breeds, like chihuahuas.

Just like in a human the fontanelle are the "soft spots" in the skull that allow passage of the head through the birth canal. Depending on the breed it will be just above the eyes but will close by age 6 months.
