at about six weeks, maybe sooner. then, it needs to be really soft kitten food. they need to nurse with their mother for as long as she will let them. it makes them grow into stronger cats.

Kittens generally begin the weaning process around 3 to 4 weeks of age. This can vary some from one litter to another, and also depends on how long the mother call will allow them to nurse. It is good to begin offering dry food when the kittens are about 3 weeks old.

You can start introducing canned kitten food around 5 weeks of age. They should be still be kept with the mother until 12 weeks. By then they should be eating on their own. If you plan on feeding them dry, mix it with wet food and/or water to soften it. Adjust as kitten grows by decreasing the amount of water.

Normally they are offered solid food softened with milk just as the mother is weaning the babies. If canned food is offered, it should also be mixed with milk.
