This world changing device was the result of a long process of invention and discovery by many people. The telephone was patented by Alexander Bell in March of 1876 and was the logical next step after the development of the telegraph.

March of the year 1876 was when Alexander Graham Bell was awarded the US patent for the first electric telephone. However credit for the invention has been disputed. For example, Innocenzo Manzetti first experimented with the idea of a "speaking telegraph" in 1844. And in 1854 Charles Bourseul published an article in a magazine on the electric transmission of speech.
