The twenty-sixth amendment to the US constitution provides 18 year old citizens with this right. Paraphrased, it states that US states cannot take away or alter the right to vote for any citizen over or at the age of 18. It is similar to the fifteenth and nineteenth amendments, which provide the right to black citizens and women respectively.

The 26th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution permitted 18-year-olds the right to vote -- technically, it prohibited the denial or abridgment of that right. It was adopted in July 1971.
