The proper fifth wheel height should never exceed 13 feet 6 inches. In order to determine the proper height, it is important to determine the tire height. The importance of this is to make sure that the trailer does not hit the tires when it is fully loaded.

The height of the fifth wheel is measured from the tractor frame to the top of the fifth wheel plate, and the overall trailer height shouldn't exceed 13' 6". Make sure you consider wheel height in this equation so the trailer doesn't hit the wheels when fully loaded.

Fifth wheel should slightly lift the trailer after coupling. Measure the distance from the ground to the trailer plate, after the trailer is coupled to the tractor. Subtract from trailer plate height, the tractor frame height. The height of the fifth wheel is measured from the tractor frame to the top of the fifth wheel top plate.
