Galileo was condemned by the Church when he made scientific pronouncements that the Earth rotated around the sun and that there were craters on the moon that could be observed by telescope. The Church felt that these pronouncements were in violation of what was taught in the Bible and made Galileo recant his views or face punishment.

Galileo was a professor/scientist who supported and expanded on Copernicus's theory that the Earth was round and revolved around the sun. Because the church supported the ancient philosopher Aristotle's theory that the sun and all other celestial bodies revolved around the Earth, Galileo's theory was seen as heretical and after much debate he ended his days under house arrest.

Galileo said the Earth went around the sun. The Catholic Church at the time said that the heavens circled around the Earth. To state otherwise was to be contrary to God's law and the Church's doctrine and therefore be in violation of Catholic teaching - this is heresy. He said he had proof otherwise and would not recant.
