Did Galileo Galilei make a thermometer?

Yes, he made a glass thermometer. It was a glass cylinder filled with a liquid and some weights. If the temperature rises so does the density of the liquid. If the density exceeds that of the weights (glass ball with some chemical in it) it starts to float because it is less dense then the liquid.

Yes, they consist of a large glass tube filled with water, containing smaller glass bulbs containing liquid. As the temperature changes, these glass bulbs rise or fall.
