replacing the base cabinet and faucets in the bathroom is a good home improvement project for the novice. I suggest purcahseing the cabinet style with the sink base allready included. You will have to purcahse the faucet and any other fixtures separate. Be sure to turn off the water to the sink before disconnecting.

Building bookcases or shelves is always a possibility. These are simple to construct, and you can also spend time on their design (such as sanding, and staining or painting the wood) if you want something more complex.

Let your son pick a new color for his room and paint it together. Painting can be a lot of fun and he gets a new look in his room.

The most exciting do it yourself project is making room in the basement, if it is an unfinished basement. It turns the worst space into a nice one.
