A smudge stick is a bundle of dried herbs, usually white sage. Other dried herbs/plants (lavender/cilantro/cedar/etc.) The leaves are bound with a string. The smudge stick is lit and the flame blown out to leave it just smoking. It is used in purification rites similar to how incense is used.
