A permeable membrane is a membrane that allows all ions and molecules to pass, wether by reverse osmosis, or by ion exchange, such as the ion-H+ pump. A permeable membrane can be inside the body, or can also be found in solutions to control the passing of ions and molecules.

An animal cell consists of a phospholipid bilayer that surrounds the cell and is permeable in the sense that they lipids are able to let good things that will help the cell through while keeping other harmful things out.
