The pleural membranes surround the lungs, attach them to the walls of the chest, and keep them separated and enclosed so air cannot escape. There are two layers. The outer, or parietal, pleura is attached to the chest wall. The inner, or visceral, pleura is attached to other visceral tissues.

This is a two fold area that forms a cavity containing fluid that protects everything inside your chest, such as your lungs, nerves and blood vessels from things that could damage those parts.

Pleural membranes are what keeps the air pressure in your lungs. Your lungs are actually made up of two pleural membranes held together by a vacuum. When you inhale your pleural membranes are drawn out by the diaphragm. This creates a low pressure in the lungs bringing air in from the atmosphere. The opposite occurs during exhalation.
