There are two likely causes. The first is the animal's eye was injured some how and has become infected. Animals can sometimes scrape their eyes while trying to squeeze through small spaces. The second, and more likely, is an infection called conjunctivitis which is pink eye only in animals.

Ocular discharge is considered normal for kittens in small quantity (approximately 1/2 drop per eye per day). If more than that is draining, then you need to take him or her to a veterinarian to check for an eye infection, ocular ulcer or other health problems. It is usually easy to treat if it is take cared of early on.
