What causes ticking in a Jack Russel?

Answer by  mammakat (11147)

If by ticking, you mean the spots that appear, it just happens. It's part of the development of the coat and/or skin. It's totally acceptable in the breed qualifications for showing by the AKC. You should make sure that these aren't spots that are crusty, oozing or infected, that is not ticking, and needs to be seen by the vet

There are numerous things that can cause ticking, including neurological problems and a couple other diseases. If the ticking continues you should see a vet to see what can be done.

Jack Russell's may/may not develop "ticking. " Ticking refers to small spots of color in the white coat. Ticking can be tan or black. Some dogs have both colors.
