A high platelet count in children is usually caused by an infection. There are not many dangers associated with a high count in children (in adults it can cause a higher likliehood of strokes). Make sure your child takes plenty of fluids and is active. If you are still concerned, speak to your pediatrician.

It can be as simple as just an infection in the child's body or it can be severe cuz their spleen isn't properly filtering the blood. This can lead to potentially life threatening blood clots. High platelets can also signify a malignancy somewhere in the body.

High platelet count is called reactive thrombocytosis and it is caused by many different underlying reasons. For one, the cells that exist in bone matter could be producing more platelets than normal or the spleen isn't removing the platelets. It could also be caused by anemia and some types of cancer including leukemia. Children should get a platelet count test.

A high platelet count in a child could mean nothing. It is likely that the child with the high count has a slight virus. A normal platelet count is between 150,000-400,000.If your count is higher than 400,000 you have thrombocytosis which is a high number of platelets in your blood. There is no reason to become alarmed, but more testing may be needed.

If there is any kind of infection or inflamation in the child's body, the platelet count will rise. The platelet count may also increase as a result of trauma or surgery to the child's body. Additionally, there are certain medicines (steroid based)that increase platelet count as well.
