Clean the fish tank that the fish is in regularly and perform water changes two to three times a week until the levels of ammonia are in line. To prevent ammonia from building up in the future make sure you have a water filter that can filter ammonia.

Ammonia burns cause the mucus on the fish to be burned away making the scales, eyes and fins susceptible to disease. You should set up a quarantine tank so that the treatment on the fish does not effect the main tank.

Check the water parameters. Keep your goldfish in clean water. Add aquarium salt and an air-bubbler. Test the aquarium water with a water quality test kit, every 3 days.
