When Macaws fails to produce egg with viable embryos it is termed as infertility. This may be due to nutritional problems, genetics or physical factors of the bird. It is also caused by social problems like when bird pairs with its mirror image then that results in empty eggs. Environmental factors also affects the eggs.

Sometimes this happens for no apparent reason, even with paired birds. If you have a single bird, it may occur if it bonds with its own reflection. Your macaw may lay empty eggs as a result of changes in it's daylight or sleep cycles.

Single birds will sometimes lay eggs due to environmental stimuli, such as a mirror: she "bonds" with her mirror image, or changes in the day-night cycle (such as keeping the bird's room lit long into the night). Paired birds sometimes lay empty eggs too - it's a natural occurrence.
