More than likely they're sowbugs (also called roly-polys or pillbugs). When disturbed, they roll themselves into a ball so their hard shell protects them. These harmless insects feed on vegetation and are attracted to damp places. Eliminate water leaks or excess moisture in your apartment, and they'll soon be gone.

The small round bugs with the hard shells in your apartment are black carpet beetles. The adult is 2. 5 to 5. 8 mm long. The larvae eat animal products like leather, wool, silk and hair. They are a pest in kitchen cabinets as well as closets and in woolen carpets and drapes.

You probably have beetles in your apartment. They tend to be very roundish, far different from cockroaches. They also tend to be almost black and you will find them in the corner of floors near the walls. They creep in underneath the base wall and pop up where the carpet meets the wall.

Without more of a description, I will guess that you are referring to Armadillidium vulgare, also known as the "roly poly" or "pill bug". They are a type of woodlouse that feeds on rotting plant material.
