It largely depends on the state in which the crime was commited, but generally penalties across the nation are around 3+ years in prison, along with hefty fines and court costs (over 20,000 dollars). Probation or parole is generally attached to sentence. It's a felony, and any felony will remove your right to vote and hinder employment.

When someone is accused of this type of crime it is considered a felony which carries strict penalties. These penalties can range from the loss of one's license, probation to severe jail time. One also may have to pay fines as well as any money that may be awarded for damages to the vehicle if a civil suit is pursued.
