In dropsy, a concentration of fluid in the body tissues and cavities causes the fish's abdomen to become swollen and appear bloated. Fish may also stop feeding, appear off-color, become listless and/or lethargic, have sunken eyes, and hang at the top or stay at the bottom of the aquarium.

Dropsy is also known as ascites. The fish may not eat and be lethargic, a swollen or distended body with protruding scales. There can be many different causes of fish dropsy and its usually difficult to know exactly what kind.

Symptoms vary but include not eating and having frayed scales. If you look down into your aquarium, the scales will not be smooth. Instead they will be jagged and look like they're pointing outwards instead of laying like they should. Dropsy is most likely fatal. You should isolate your fish if there are others in the tank.
