If you want free, open source software the first and best choice is Blender. Blender's main downside is the learning curve, as it can be a bit hard to master. Other good choices, but not free, are Cinema 4D, $1000+ and Maya, $3000+. There are others, but I have not known anyone who has used them.

Blender is a perfect 3d software. It supports rendering, modelling support. Some of the short films have created using blender software. k-3d is another 3d editing software. It supports many other 3d editing software formats. It has nice interface. Art of Illusion uses simple interface. It has lot of features to complete the animation project.

The one that instantly springs to mind is the free and open source package Blender. It's user interface is a little idiosyncratic, so there's a bit of a learning curve, but it's extremely powerful in the right hands.
