Bladder retention can be caused by bladder dropping in some older women who have weak pelvic muscles. This can cause problems emptying the whole bladder. Also problems with the muscles of the bladder can cause retention of the bladder and both can be fixed surgically if necessary but a doctor can tell the true cause.

There are various causes of bladder retention and may be specific for either females or males. Common causes in males include an enlarged prostate, a bladder calculi or a urethral stricture. Others less common include a neurological cause, such as paraparesis, spinal stenosis and others. Females are less likely to have a bladder outlet obstruction.
